Over 80 Armenian citizens stuck on the Russian-Georgian border, near Upper Lars checkpoint, Interfax South reports.

Several buses, mini buses and vehicles were trapped near the checkpoint which has been closed for several days due to heavy avalanches in the mountains.

Representative of the Russian emergency situations ministry Yulia Starchenko said the Georgian Military Road may be opened after reaching agreement with the Georgian side. She stressed over 20 people, including women and three children, were accommodated in hotels of Vladikavkaz, North Ossetia.

The Upper Lars is the only Armenia’s overland commercial rout to Russia. It was reopened after three years’ break on March 1, 2010 under the mediation of Swiss Embassy. Around 7,000 people, 50 buses and 500 vehicles cross the checkpoint every day.
