The Upper Lars checkpoint located on the Russian-Georgian border is still closed due to avalanche threat, Georgian road department informed Armenian News-NEWS.am.

It is still snowing near the checkpoint and there is a threat of avalanches in the mountains. “We will clean the road as soon as it stops snowing. However, the situation will hardly change till Sunday,” said representatives of Georgian road department. As to the passengers stuck on the road, they get food and medical treatment if necessary, they said.

Several buses, mini buses and vehicles were trapped near the checkpoint which has been closed for several days due to avalanche threat. Over 80 Armenian citizens stuck on the Russian-Georgian border.

The Upper Lars is the only Armenia’s overland commercial rout to Russia. It was reopened after three years’ break on March 1, 2010 under the mediation of Swiss Embassy. Around 7,000 people, 50 buses and 500 vehicles cross the checkpoint every day.
