YEREVAN. - International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts will arrive in Armenia to conduct safety test at the Metsamor nuclear power plant (NPP) in Armenia, Ashot Martirosyan, Head of the Nuclear Safety Committee, Government of Armenia, told journalists Wednesday.

The experts are to visit Armenia May 15 to June 1.

After the Fukushima nuclear accidents, EU member-states have been offered to conduct serious safety tests at their NPPs.

“We intend to conduct an in-depth analysis because major earthquakes are possible in our region,” Martirosyan said.

The safety tests will last for three months, and the necessary measures will be determined. At present, the Metsamor NPP meets the IAEA safety standards. However, regular safety tests need to be conducted, Martirosyan said.

In his earlier interview with Armenian News-NEWS.am, Armenian Minister of Energy Armen Movsisyan said that Armenia would not stop using nuclear energy even after the Japan disaster.
