YEREVAN. – Hraparak daily of Armenia writes: Since Armen Sarkissian's resignation, the NA [(National Assembly)] opposition has been discussing the matter of a presidential candidate.
At first, they were inclined toward not nominating a candidate at all, as it would be a formality nomination in the case of the ruling majority.
However, as a result of the discussions, they came to the conclusion that the parliament should not be left without an alternative, it is a good chance to talk about the country's problems, to start a new phase of the struggle, to come up with a major candidate.
They said that they considered many candidates. Some did not accept the offer—they were afraid of being targeted by the authorities.
The [NA faction of the opposition] "Armenia" Bloc is inclined toward nominating a candidate equivalent to [the authorities’ presidential candidate] Vahagn Khachatryan—a figure of the same period, a public figure, previously held a position who will be acceptable to thinking people, and the unprincipledness of the authorities’ candidate will be seen against his backdrop.
