Severe flooding caused by seasonal rains in eastern Afghanistan killed at least nine people overnight, swept away homes, destroyed livestock and farmland, AP reported, citing local authorities.

Abdullah Mufaker, head of the Logar Province Disaster Management Ministry, said it is not yet known how many people have died and been injured by the rising waters, but at least nine people have died.

Village elder Del Agha said the flood was unprecedented in Khushi's history. “It destroyed all the people’s animals, houses and agricultural lands,” he said. “People are homeless, they have been force to take refuge in the mountains.”

Last week, heavy rains triggered flash floods that killed at least 31 people and left dozens missing in northern Afghanistan.
