YEREVAN.- Sugar went up in price dramatically in Armenia over a day, shows the survey in the supermarkets conducted by the Armenian News-NEWS.am correspondent.

Price jumped from less than $1(AMD 350) to $1.23 (AMD 450). Explaining rise in prices, representatives of supermarkets said it is conditioned by increase in the world markets.

Famous businessman, MP from Armenia’s ruling party Samvel Alexanyan is a monopolist in country’s sugar market. Alexanyan’s “Alex Grig” company imports 99.99% of sugar.

As regards the reasons for price hike, explained by growing sugar price in the world markets, I wonder why Armenia does not drop the price for flour and bread, while the world prices for these products are rapidly rolling down.

Meanwhile, flour market in Armenia is considered one of the most centralized. According to the State Commission for the Protection of Economic Competition, “Alex Grig” and “Manana Grain” jointly occupy about 80% of the market.
