YEREVAN. – Infertility rate in Armenia reaches 18 percent, which is within the norm, Maternal And Child Health Protection Research Center Director, Professor Georgy Okoyev said during a press conference on Thursday. 

In his words, certain infertility cases can be cured by minor medical intervention, but complicated cases could need artificial insemination. Even though the specialist could not give an average fee for such treatment, he did inform that, on the average, 1 million drams ($2,700) is spent on necessary medication, adding: “The fees for artificial insemination vary.” 

Responding to Armenian News-NEWS.am reporter’s question as to whether artificial insemination can give 100 percent positive results, Georgy Okoyev said no.        

In conclusion, Okoyev noted that Armenia’s “cold and dark” years of the 1990s definitely impacted the increase of infertility among both men and women. “But as a rule, the mothers firstly bring the girl to the specialist. And the family’s impatience plus its wish to get quick results is another issue altogether,” Okoyev maintained.
