YEREVAN. - Armenian National Security Council Interdepartmental Committee meeting discussed the development of strategies to combat destructive sectarian movements and ensure the safety of religion.
NSC Secretary Artur Baghdasaryan said that the provision of religious security is a priority of national security strategy and includes prevention of phenomena threatening the moral, ethical and spiritual-cultural identity of the Armenian people.
Baghdasaryan particularly stressed that the document cannot be associated with restriction of liberty of conscience, religion, fundamental rights and freedoms. It should not be considered as a manifestation of discrimination against a particular religious direction. It is aimed at neutralizing and restraining only those sectarian movements that have deconstructive and damaging nature and may have a fatal impact on the institutions of private life, family, society and democracy.
The Secretary, however, did not mention which body would be authorized to implement the document provisions and which are the deconstructive and damaging subjects that will be affected.
