ISTANBUL. – Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s “Dersim apology” continues to receive reactions in the Turkish press. Hurriyet daily’s columnist Sedat Ergin also reflected on this topic in his article entitled “Our History Must be Reviewed.”    

The Turkish columnist notes that Erdogan’s apology for the 1938 Dersim (today’s Tunceli) massacre is a very important precedent in terms of facing history. 

“There are numerous events in Turkey’s history that need to be faced, or be reviewed and examined. Call them whatever you like, but the most important from them is close to 1.5 million Armenians’ deportation from their lands in Turkey and the massacring of their considerable number,” Hurriyet’s columnist wrote.     

To note, thousands of Armenians, who had escaped from the 1915 Genocide and found refuge in the villages of Dersim, were subjected to a second genocide, this time in 1938.
