The European Union opposed US President Donald Trump's initiative to relocate Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to Jordan and Egypt. EU diplomatic chief Kaja Kallas said that the residents of the Gaza Strip have already suffered too much and deserve peace just like Israelis. The EU continues to support a settlement based on peaceful coexistence between Israeli and Palestinian states, she added.

Dutch Foreign Minister Kasper Veldkamp was more emphatic: He rejected speculation about Palestinian resettlement in Jordan and Egypt. He said Palestinians should “be able to stay in the Palestinian territories, whether in the West Bank or the Gaza Strip,” DW reports.

Irish Foreign Minister Simon Harris expressed a similar view. He emphasized that the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip provides for the return of residents to their homes. According to him, the priority is to “implement this agreement in letter and spirit.” He also noted that the Trump administration has played “a positive role in creating these conditions.”
