Egypt said Tuesday that the country's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi did not speak on the phone with US President Donald Trump over the weekend, after the American leader called for the resettlement of Palestinians from Gaza to Egypt and Jordan, AFP reported.

“A high-ranking official source denied some media reports of a telephone conversation between the Egyptian and US presidents,” Egypt's state-run news service said, adding that any such contact would have been announced in advance.

On Saturday, Trump said he would like Egypt and Jordan to accept more refugees from the Gaza Strip in order to “just clean up” Gaza.

The U.S. president said he would talk to al-Sisi on Sunday, but neither leader's office announced the phone call. Egypt's Foreign Ministry issued a statement Sunday rejecting “any encroachment on the Palestinians' inalienable rights to their land,” whether “temporary or long-term.”

Egypt is a key USA ally in the region and was the only country besides Israel to receive an exemption from Trump's moratorium on foreign aid this week.
