US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday requiring proof of citizenship documents when registering to vote in elections.

“A state or local government official must indicate on the form the type of document the applicant has provided as documentation of United States citizenship, including the date the document was issued, the expiration date of the document (if any), the issuing agency, and any unique data, while taking appropriate information security measures,” reads the executive order, which was released by the White House.

It notes that federal law “prohibits foreign nationals from participating in federal, state, or local elections by making any contributions or expenditures.”

“This kind of foreign interference in our electoral process undermines the voting rights of American citizens to govern their Republic,” the executive order emphasizes.

According to the document, states that do not take steps to “secure” their elections will have their federal funding cut.

The executive order calls on the Justice Department to prosecute election-related offenses in states that the administration believes “fail to comply with federal election integrity laws.”
The ordinance also seeks to prohibit states from counting ballots that election officials receive in the mail after Election Day.
