The leader of Turkey's largest opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), 50-year-old Ozgur Ozel, said that the party will continue to organize protests every weekend in different cities against the arrest of former Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, nominated by the opposition as a presidential candidate in early elections, DW reports.

In addition, the HDP will hold rallies in different districts of Istanbul every Wednesday night, Reuters specified.

The HDP's extraordinary congress was called after the party said authorities decided to appoint a proxy to run it amid a prosecutor's investigation into alleged irregularities during the 2023 congress.
