Canada will hold snap parliamentary elections. A total of 16 parties will be running in the elections, and the leader of the winning political force will become the country's 25th prime minister.

The next election was supposed to be held in October. But after Justin Trudeau resigned as Prime Minister and leader of the ruling Liberal Party of Canada in early March, his successor, Mark Carney, announced a snap election on Monday.

Carney could fail a vote of confidence in parliament, where the Liberals do not have a majority, and almost immediately lose his position as prime minister.

After Trudeau's resignation, the Liberals' support by the people has increased sharply, as Canadians approve of the cabinet's tariff war with the United States. In these circumstances, Carney hopes to use public support and form a majority government—something the Liberals have failed to do since 2015.
