A possible agreement to end the war should not become a “dictatorial peace” to the detriment of Ukraine, German foreign minister Johann Wadephul said, DW reports

“Future security guarantees for Ukraine should be very close to NATO membership,” he stressed, speaking at the German government’s Open Day, dpa reports. “We cannot demand that Ukraine seriously consider territorial concessions if it does not receive real security guarantees from as many countries as possible that at least the rest [of the Ukrainian territory] will be safe.”

Wadephul expressed hope that focusing on such security guarantees would eventually be able to convince Russian President Vladimir Putin as well.

“In that case, it could become the basis for us in Europe to finally achieve peace again,” added the German FM.

According to him, at the moment, about 30 countries, including Japan, have expressed their readiness to support Ukraine.
