Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that an American takeover of Greenland would amount to the end of the NATO military alliance, AP reports.
“If the United States chooses to attack another NATO country militarily, then everything stops,” Frederiksen told Danish broadcaster TV2 on Monday.
Greenland's Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen also warned of “catastrophic consequences” of any US military action against Greenland.
The statements by the Danish and Greenlandic prime ministers came shortly after the US operation in Venezuela, during which President Nicolas Maduro and his wife were in fact abducted and taken to the US on charges of drug trafficking, AP adds.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump stated that Greenland, an autonomous Danish island, is needed by the US for defense purposes.
