A small group of Senate Republicans joined with all Democrats to narrowly advance a war powers resolution that would block the use of the US Armed Forces to engage in hostilities within or against Venezuela unless authorized by Congress, ABC News reports

The legislation advanced by a vote of 52-47. It needed 51 votes to move forward. One Republican abstained.

But this was a test vote. The Senate will still have to take a vote on final passage of the legislation, and it is not yet clear when that vote will be.

If the Senate ultimately passes this bill, it will still need to be approved by the House and signed into law by President Donald Trump.

In order to overcome a possible veto for Trump, a two-thirds vote in both chambers of Congress is needed.

Last year, Republicans blocked two similar resolutions that were put to a vote in the Senate.
