George Avakian, renowned American Armenian record producer and talent scout died Wednesday at his home in Manhattan, New York City; he was 98, according to the New York Times.

His death was confirmed by his daughter, Anahid Avakian Gregg.

George Mesrop Avakian was born on March 15, 1919, in Armavir, Russia, to Armenian parents, Mesrop and Manoushak Avakian. His family moved to the United States shortly after he was born.

Avakian had worked with famous jazz performers such as Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, and Duke Ellington.

In 2011, his name was added to the ASCAP Jazz Wall of Fame as a Living Legend Giant of Jazz.
