Saudi Arabian authorities are considering blaming a top intelligence official General Assiri close to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for Jamal Khashoggi’s assassination, The New York Times reported referring to the three people with knowledge of the Saudi plans.

According to the source, Assiri received from Mohammed bin Salman an oral instruction to kidnap Khashoggi and deliver him for interrogation to Saudi Arabia, but Assiri either misunderstood his instructions or overstepped that authorization and took the dissident’s life.

Jamal Khashoggi disappeared during his visit to the consulate building of Saudi Arabia in Istanbul on October 2.
