The US Embassy in Baku urged the Azerbaijani government to implement the new Law on Media in line with the OSCE standards and its international commitments,  Turan News Agency reported.

The News Agency requested for an assessment of the US Embassy's position on the Media Law signed by President Aliyev the day before.

The response from the US Embassy spokesperson said:

“We are concerned that new law on the media was adopted and signed not taking into account the independent reporters, media experts and international companies, including OSCE and the European Court. We continue to study the law signed by Aliyev and are looking forward to the analysis of the law by the experts. We call on the government to apply the new law according to the commitments in the framework of the OSCE and other international organizations”, the Official Representative of the Embassy mentioned.

On Tuesday, President Ilham Aliyev signed into law the Law on Media adopted by the Parliament of Azerbaijan on 30 December last year. The head of state also signed a decree on the application of the law and regulating a number of issues arising from it. After the law was passed by parliament, the State Department urged President Aliyev not to sign it in its current form.
