YEREVAN.- Head of the Armenian police Alik Sargsyan presented his view on the recent incident involving the young opposition activists.

Talking to the journalists on Thursday Sargsyan claimed activists of the opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC) were initiators of the incident.

According to the chief of police, an incident occurred on Tuesday evening when policeman noticed a young man walking with a dog without a muzzle. Policemen made a remark, whereas young man promised not to repeat his mistake.

At the same time a group of ANC activists, Sargsyan said, decided to interfere. One of them Tigran Arakelyan came up to policemen and started arguing with policemen. An argument turned into a scuffle, the ANC members were the initiators, chief of police stressed.

As a result of 20-minute scuffle, seven opposition activists were detained. Interestingly, owner of the dog has not been identified yet. According to the police official, Arakelyan broke law enforcer’s nose knocking him in a police car.

A criminal case is opened, the examination revealed Tigran Arakelyan and his “team-mates” were drunk.

Sargsyan also touched upon the previous arrest of Tigran Arakelyan.

“Young man had health problems. He could go blind in jail unless he received necessary treatment. I personally asked for his release due to the circumstances,” he added.

Sargsyan also dismissed allegations that the detained were banned from meeting the lawyers.

He called not to involve police in politics and let the policemen perform their duties.
