The US Department of State has released a statement in connection with the death of Karen Petrosyan, a resident of Chinari village of Armenia’s Tavush region, who died while held captive by Azerbaijan.

The US State Department stated that it is deeply concerned about what had occurred, the Public TV of Armenia reported.

It also called upon the Azerbaijani government to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident, and present the results to the public.

In addition, the US Department of State urged the parties to respect the international humanitarian law and allow the International Committee of the Red Cross to visit the people who are held captive as a result of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Karen Petrosyan, 32, was captured by the Azerbaijanis on August 7, and on the next day, Azerbaijan informed that the young Armenian man had “suddenly” died of an “acute heart failure.” The Investigation Committee of Armenia has launched a criminal case for the murder.
