The European Union (EU) expects the Armenian authorities to give logical answers to the recently listed questions about human rights protection and democratic development in the country, Swedish Ambassador to Armenia Hans-Gunnar Aden told a press briefing.
“We have discussed a number of issues related to human rights and freedom of speech with the Armenian authorities and expect them to give logical answers to the questions raised,” Aden said.
He pointed out that Armenia has yet to do much to ensure the freedom of the press and worship, rights to demonstrations and independence of the judicial system.
In this context, the Swedish Ambassador pointed out that no independent investigation of the tragic events on March 1-2, 2008, has so far been conducted in Armenia, and those responsible for the death of tern persons have not been punished.
All the points are basic principles of the EU Eastern Partnership program Armenia is involved in. Ambassador Aden expressed hope that the Armenian authorities will soon answer the questions raised, as they expressed their readiness to ensure progress in these fields.
