YEREVAN. – It would have been good if Armenia’s President were to attend the Chicago NATO Summit, former FM Vartan Oskanian wrote in his Facebook account.
“Such multilateral opportunities are not much, and it is an excellent opportunity to discuss Armenia’s concerns with the leaders of other countries,” Oskanian said and added:
“I would not have seen a problem if the President’s explanation for not attending the Summit had not been this: The Chicago Summit’s draft declaration includes a general formulation, with respect to the resolution of conflicts in the South Caucasus and in Moldova, which is inconsistent with the statements and decisions adopted in regard to the problem’s settlements within the OSCE framework. First, this explanation is a defeatist position. Second, this is the shortest way toward self-isolation.”
As per Vartan Oskanian, the Nagorno-Karabakh issue’s resolution is not reserved for NATO, and therefore the latter’s formulation cannot be accepted as basis.
“Fourth, NATO’s declaration does not state that the Karabakh question must be settled within the confines of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity.
Fifth, if we were to judge by this logic, it would mean Armenia’s President should not head to Iran, Georgia, and numerous other countries.
Everything would have been perceived normally if there had not been the President’s official explanation for not heading to Chicago,” Armenia’s former FM also wrote in his Facebook account.
