KIEV. – The strategy of recognizing the Artsakh [Nagorno-Karabakh] independence on the level of local self-governmental bodies of various states is likely to be effective in case European countries and the U.S. try to neglect the situation in the Caucasus, Ukrainian expert Oleg Smirnov said.

“The resolution by New South Wales Parliament is another example of an effective work of the Armenian community. Overall, the strategy of gaining recognition of Artsakh’s independence by promoting the issue via local self-governmental bodies of various states is likely to be very effective in case European countries and the U.S. try to neglect the situation in the Caucasus,” the expert stated.

Australia’s New South Wales Parliament adopted a resolution recognizing the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh and the right to self-determination of its Armenian citizens on Oct. 25, Armenian National Committee of Australia reported.

The motion acknowledges the 20th anniversary of independence for the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh, it supports the right of self-determination of its people, and it “calls on the Commonwealth Government [of Australia] to officially recognize the independence of the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh and strengthen Australia’s relationship with the Nagorno-Karabakh and its citizens.”
