YEREVAN. – During Thursday’s Cabinet session, the Government of Armenia approved the draft safety requirements for the country’s new nuclear power plant (NPP), or plants.  

In line with this document, the “Principle of Deep Echelon Protection” will be the main precept for ensuring the safety of nuclear installation. It assumes the use of protective barriers to prevent radiation emission to the environment.     

Also, the NPP’s operating organization will be obligated to take measures to protect the plant’s security systems in case of serious accidents.  

In addition, the nuclear installation plan must envision requirements of protection against local risks. Corresponding preventive measures need to be planned and steps must be taken to localize the aftermath of an accident. Fires and floods likewise will be considered when planning the nuclear installation.
