YEREVAN. – The Prosperous Armenia, Orinats Yerkir (Rule of Law), and Republican (RPA) parties are the coauthors of the country’s current Electoral Code. National Assembly (NA) Deputy Speaker, NA RPA Faction member, and RPA Spokesperson Eduard Sharmazanov stated this on Tuesday, and during a briefing with news reporters, in response to second President Robert Kocharyan’s statements on the shortfalls and defects of the majority election system.     

“We coauthored and adopted that electoral code together with the Prosperous Armenia and Orinats Yerkir parties, and, subsequently, held the best elections in Armenia’s modern history. The conclusion is that if we have conducted such good elections, then judgments about feudal landlords, the majority election system allegedly being an obstacle, is unrealistic,” Sharmazanov said.         

He brought the example of Hungary, which has parliamentary governance yet its PM made a felonious arrangement with Azerbaijan and extradited Ramil Safarov, the Azerbaijani army officer who had killed with an axe Armenian soldier Gurgen Margaryan in Budapest back in 2004 and who was released in Azerbaijan.

But the US, which has presidential governance and a majority election system, is developing democratically. “What’s important is the content and not the form,” Eduard Sharmazanov noted.
