Armenia’s Vardenis city resident Argam Antonyan, 46, who was transferred to a capital city Yerevan hospital after being injured as a result of the collapse of a bridge in Vardenis, underwent a surgery on Thursday, the Health Minister’s Press Secretary Anahit Haytayan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.
She added, however, that Antonyan’s leg was amputated until the knee and, now, he is recovering at the hospital’s department of intensive care.
The other person who had sustained injury as a result of the bridge collapse, namely, Vardenis resident Robert Hambardzumyan, 57, was administered first aid at Vardenis Medical Center, and discharged, Center Surgery Department Head Rudik Hakobyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.
He further informed that the injured were railway station workers who were carrying out repair work. “They hoisted a tractor onto the bridge; the bridge collapsed [and] fell on the workers,” Hakobyan said.
The Police press service informed Armenian News-NEWS.am that a criminal case is opened on this incident, and on charges of violating the labor protection rules, which has negligently caused human death.
To note, Nerses Martirosyan, 55, Gagik Avetisyan, 56, and Varuzhan Sargsyan, 56, died as a result of Thursday’s bridge collapse. All the victims were manual workers, whereas Martirosyan was a deputy director at the Vardenis branch of the South Caucasus Railway Company.
