The election campaign is in a rather serious ideological struggle, said the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan at the meeting with voters in the administrative district of Arabkir in Yerevan city this Thursday.

“And it is good that the campaign does not become a life-and-death struggle,” he said.

The president said that the shots which sounded on January 31 (attack on the presidential candidate Paruyr Hayrikyan - ed.), could change all that, but, “thanks to God, it did not happen,” and everything returned to normal condition.

Commenting on the opinion of excessive passivity of the society, Sargsyan noted that it is either unrealistic statements or a negative attitude.

“This is not true. Elections should not be life-and-death struggle, and each candidate must clearly understand: winning - is not the main purpose of his life, it is not the end of the world, thus, life does not end with elections. Well, the fact that the election campaign is no rush means that each candidate has the opportunity to present his own thesis,” he said.

As for the claim that the campaign is not interesting, the president reminded that this is not a movie or a football game.

“This event is a crucial milestone for the country. Those, who is interested, are involved, and if someone does not participate, then who’s to blame? We do not keep them in jail. Are they scared? If they are scared, how can they wish to become a president?" he said.
