YEREVAN. – Speaking in the run-up to elections and taking action after them are different things altogether, Caucasus Institute Director, political scientist Alexander Iskandaryan said during a press conference on Wednesday.     

The analyst noted that no matter who the president of Armenia is, he faces several difficult problems, and their nature does not change based on a person’s political preferences.  

As an important matter, Iskandaryan noted the need to bring investments to Armenia.

“We do not have power-generating substances, and that is why the investments should be brought by political means,” he recalled. And as such, he highlighted two points: The need to look good in the eyes of the West, and to maintain relations with Russia.

“Any president shall—and does—do both of them,” the political scientist stressed.   

As per Iskandaryan, the second key issue for Armenia is the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The maintenance of the balance is important here, and any president would do that, too. At the same time, it is indispensable to assist the OSCE Minsk Group format, interact with the CSTO, and develop ties with EU.

The third matter, according to the analyst, is Armenia’s domestic arena. Business should be brought out of shadow economy, as much as possible, and decoupled from politics.

“None of these problems can be resolved by a revolution; this is a daily hard work,” Alexander Iskandaryan recalled.
