YEREVAN. – It is not a secret that the Armenian capital city Yerevan Council election—which is slated for May 5—is turning into an attempt to get revenge for the recent presidential vote in the country, sociologist Aharon Adibekyan stated during a press conference on Friday.   

In his words, the Yerevan Council election will see a third redistribution among the constituents. The first was during last year’s parliamentary vote, and the second was in the presidential election on February 18.

“In the presidential vote, all constituents united around two candidates: [Incumbent President] Serzh Sargsyan and [opposition Heritage Party Chairman, former FM] Raffi Hovannisian. Now, however, there are seven participants: Six [political] parties and one bloc,” Adibekyan noted.       

To the query as to how the Yerevan Council election will be different, the sociologist stated that the political force which has a command of resources, and whose “first person” is recognized and acceptable by the society, will be successful on May 5.         

As per Aharon Adibekyan, the ruling Republican Party is in the leading position. In addition, as per the sociologist, a question arises: Will the opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC) constituents, who had voted for Hovannisian in the presidential vote, return to ANC?
