YEREVAN. – No such situation ever occurred in Armenia. There have been acute situations, but today—and although there is no external tension—there is tension among the authorities, and they are unable to smoothen it. Green Party of Armenia Chairman Armenak Dovlatyan stated this during a press conference on Monday. 

In his view, the recent presidential election exceeded his expectations in terms of voting irregularities.       

“And had there not been [election] fraud, [opposition Heritage Party Chairman, former FM Raffi] Hovannisian [who is declared runner-up to the winner, incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan, as a result of the presidential election that was conducted on February 18, but who claims to be the real winner in the vote and who declared a hunger strike on March 10 at capital city Yerevan’s Liberty Square] would have won,” Dovlatyan maintained. 

Reflecting on President Sargsyan’s response to Hovannisian’s letter of proposition, the Green Party leader noted that the parties need to meet and discuss the current situation. 

“But Hovannisian himself should find a solution to the given situation,” Dovlatyan added.    

At the same time, however, he did not comment on Hovannisian’s next courses of action, but noted that Heritage’s leader sometimes makes unpredictable decisions.  

“Hovannisian often adopts decisions which even his party members are uninformed of, and that is why I can say that everything is possible,” Armenak Dovlatyan concluded.
