YEREVAN. – Armenia’s Human Rights Defender, Karen Andreasyan, petitioned to Police Chief Vladimir Gasparyan, in connection with Tuesday’s incidents that occurred in capital city Yerevan and the actions which the Police took on that day.

“Based on the reports that were received on [Tuesday,] April 9, staff members of the Armenian Human Rights Defender visited the Erebuni and Arabkir precincts of the Yerevan Department of Armenia’s Police.

Please provide your explanations on the legal justification for detaining [several] persons [on that day].

Also, please inform on the legal substantiation whereby Baghramyan Avenue of the City of Yerevan was closed, on [Tuesday,] April 9, as a result of which others’ right to freedom of movement was curtailed.

I expect to receive your response within three days,” the Armenian ombudsman’s letter of petition reads in particular.
