YEREVAN. – There was no logical consistency in the steps taken by Armenia’s opposition Heritage Party, specifically by its leader, former FM Raffi Hovannisian—who was declared runner-up to the winner, incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan, as a result of the presidential election that was conducted on February 18, but who claims to be the real winner in the vote. Opposition Armenian National Congress National Assembly (ANC NA) Faction MP, former Military Prosecutor Gagik Jhangiryan stated this during Friday’s NA briefings with news reporters, reflecting on the question as to why ANC did not participate in Tuesday’s rally of the Hovannisian-led movement.
Jhangiryan also recalled that ANC had announced that it will not partake in that event.
To the query as to what extent the police actions were lawful on Tuesday, when they had beaten Heritage member Armen Martirosyan, Jhangiryan responded that if we compare these events with the similar ones that ANC had held in 2010 and in 2011, such incidents had occurred at that time, as well.
In the ex-military prosecutor’s words, although the actions by the law enforcement were unlawful, nothing unusual has occurred.
