YEREVAN. – Latvian President Andris Berzins received, on Thursday in capital city Riga, an Armenian delegation led by National Assembly (NA) Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan.

Berzins gave a high assessment to the level of Armenian-Latvian interaction and the relations between Armenia and Latvia, the NA press service informs. The President underscored Abrahamyan’s official visit to Latvia, and pointed to the need to develop interparliamentary ties, enhance bilateral contacts, and deepen cooperation. He stressed that Latvia supports Armenia’s European integration and offered Latvia’s respective knowhow.

In his turn, Hovik Abrahamyan said the Armenian authorities give emphasis to contacts with Latvia and noted that the Armenian-Latvian political agenda is quite eventful. In his words, Armenia attaches great importance to the development of relations with the EU member countries and parliaments, and the EU Eastern Partnership moves Armenia’s interaction with European countries to a qualitatively new level. The Armenian Parliament leader also highlighted the need to invigorate bilateral trade and economic ties and, in this context, underscored the activities of the Armenian-Latvian Intergovernmental Commission.        

Andris Berzins and Hovik Abrahamyan also reflected on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and other regional matters. Abrahamyan stressed that Armenia’s views the aforesaid conflict’s settlement solely along the lines of the OSCE Minsk Group and through peace talks. The Latvian President likewise underscored the matter’s pacific resolution within the Minsk Group format.
