YEREVAN. – Armenia is attempting to find a format for relations with the Eurasian Economic Union of the future, political scientist Narek Galstyan stated during a press conference on Friday.  

He recalled that although Armenia joined the CIS free trade zone in 2012, three members of this zone—namely, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Belarus—plan to sign an agreement on the establishment of the Customs Union. 

“The establishment of such union will mean the markets of these states will be difficult to access for us [i.e., Armenia], and we are endeavoring to neutralize this obstacle for Armenia by attempting to create some formats for cooperation with the Customs Union, [but] which does not mean joining it,” Galstyan stressed. 

The analyst assured that Russia has no need to put pressure on Armenia.

“We have made a choice; we are cooperating in two directions, and we do not yet see any obstacles. [But] if any clash occurs between these two organizations, we will face a dilemma,” the political scientist said.    

Narek Galstyan added, however, that Russia’s and the European Union’s “battle” in the post-Soviet expanse is for Ukraine, and not Armenia.
