YEREVAN. – Former political prisoner Azat Arshakyan takes the initiative to establish a presidents’ club in Armenia seriously.
Arshakyan himself noted the aforesaid during a press conference on Thursday.
He stated that there should be a club not solely for the presidents, but also for the National Assembly (NA) speakers, the ministers, and the NA and Council of Europe MPs of Armenia because this is the country’s political elite.
“If the three presidents manage to cooperate at least at a club level, it would be very good. Being very different, it would be very good that they show an example of solidarity,” Azat Arshakyan added.
On his part, opposition member and former Deputy Minister of Defense Vahan Shirkhanyan said he does not believe that such club will be established in Armenia.
“The person himself should have an internal sophistication. Being elected, the President [of Armenia] puts his hand on the Bible and pledges to serve Armenia and the Armenian nation. But when his term in office ends, he goes and forgets. Of course, he is relieved of the duties [as the President], but the ethical [duties] always exist.
“I do not agree that it [i.e., the presidents’ club] should have been [established] a long time ago. But they will not pass it because the envy, the evil is within us lot more than the culture of working fair and square,” Shirkhanyan argued.
