YEREVAN. – President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan on Tuesday visited new export-oriented farm opened jointly by Armenian-Dutch Biga LLC.
President inspected the strawberry beds in Akunk village of Kotayk Region, got acquainted with the development prospects, the Armenian News-NEWS.am correspondent reports.
The company is harvesting around 60 tons of strawberry a year. The half is being sold inside the country and the rest is exported to Russia and the United Arab Emirates.
“We have recently launched strawberry exports to UAE. It is too early to speak about the achievements. I think that success with greenhouse mushrooms will repeat. They are sold in Carrefour supermarkets in UAE,” head of the company Samvel Petrosyan told reporters.
The company plans to increase the annual production of berries up to 300 tons per year. For this reason, the company has already imported and planted 16,000 seedlings of raspberry, 4,000 of blackberry and 350,000 of strawberries.
The company also plans to set up new cherry orchards that will be export-oriented as well. A greenhouse with a cooling system is being built so that to use it in summer.
Investments under the program amounted to approximately $3.5 million. The company employs 73 people with a salary of AMD 100,000-120,000.
In addition to a farm in Akunk village, the company owns vegetable and mushroom greenhouses in Armavir Region.
