YEREVAN. – Armenian economist Ashot Yeghiazaryan is convinced that Customs Union is a failed structure and political union, while Armenia’s accession is a dead end.

During the Wednesday media conference, Yeghiazaryan quoted the recent statement of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko, noting that it proves Armenia is being prepared not only to Customs Union, but accession to the Eurasian Union which he called “a project to revive empire.”

Customs Union does not suggest any preferences, but makes Armenia dependent on Russia and poses many risks. By signing an agreement on free trade area, Armenia had a chance to sign similar treaties with countries and unions. By joining Customs Union, the country will on the contrary close its borders.

“Appearing in different economic alliances with Georgia, the alliances that may enter into confrontation, Armenia can be faced with a situation when it will voluntarily close the border with Georgia,” he said.

Joining the Customs Union would lead to higher prices for many goods and will significantly limit the ability to control inflation.

The economist called “ridiculous” the arguments that Armenia would not win in case of the association with EU, since the Armenian products are uncompetitive. The Association Agreement could lead to improving the quality and competitiveness of Armenian goods, he emphasized.
