YEREVAN. – The first charter flight of the Armenian “Air Armenia” landed in Yerevan on Wednesday.

Marketing manager Sirak Ambartsumian told Armenian News-NEWS.am that the Rostov-on-Don–Yerevan flight brought a bride to the wedding.

“They went for a bride from Yerevan, and brought her on a separate plane. But in the future we want to carry out regular charter flights, since we have already got our own fleet,” Hambartsumyan said.

The company, founded in 2003, was engaged in cargo transportation. The company has recently got license for passenger flights, but they were not carried out due to lack of passenger aircrafts.

The company already has Boeing 737 and is going to purchase another two aircrafts by the end of this year.

The first flight coincided with the announcement on liberalization of air transport. For years, the civil aviation of Armenia was based on the national carrier (Armenian Airlines, later Armavia). Armavia stopped working due to financial difficulties in late March 2013.

In order to draw up a new strategy for the aviation market, Armenian government has invited the consulting company McKinsey & Co which recommended that Armenia must adopt an “open sky policy.” Armenian Economy Minister said liberalization of Armenia’s air transport sector will cause a 1-2 percent economic growth in the country.
