European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs committee approved by majority of votes the draft resolution on the South Caucasus proposed by Bulgarian MEP Evgeny Kirilov.

The implementation of the Eastern Partnership, which covers the three South-Caucasian republics and coming into force of the Lisbon Treaty offers the EU a unique opportunity to conceive a comprehensive strategy for the region, the report reads.

Europe will have to deal with a complex geopolitical situation, marked by conflict in the Nagorno-Karabakh area and in Georgia, as well as tensions between Armenia and Turkey, the press release says. According to MEPs, ‘frozen conflicts’ hinder economic and social development of the region.

European Parliament MPs also express their support to the strengthening of EU-South Caucasus cooperation in energy projects, in particular to the successful implementation of Nabucco.
