YEREVAN. – Escalation in the Karabakh conflict area proceeds from the political goals of Azerbaijan, director of Caucasus Institute Sergey Minasyan told reporters.

Azerbaijani political and military leadership have an opinion that it will be possible to change status quo by forcing Armenian side to take some actions by means of incidents on the border.

“But they forget that the status quo can be changed in two cases: through resuming hostilities – which I believe is unlikely to happen at the moment – or based on certain agreements reached during negotiation process,” Minasyan said.

If Azerbaijan is opposing mechanisms of trust on the contact line, it is clear that these steps prolong the status quo, the political analyst added.
