YEREVAN. – The UK has not made any representations to the government of Armenia on the issue of the detainees, UK Ambassador to Armenia Katherine Leach said in response to the Armenian News-NEWS.am inquiry whether UK is going to deal with the case.
“In her response Baroness Anelay made the point that the UK does not recognise the Court proceedings in question because it does not recognise the de-facto authorities in Nagorno-Karabakh. The UK has not made any representations to the government of Armenia on the issue of the detainees,” Ambassador said.
Katherine Leach provided the quote of the Minister, running as follows: “The UK has not made any representations to the government of Armenia about the detention of Shahbaz Guliyev and Dilgam Askerov in the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh. However, we have discussed this case with the International Committee of the Red Cross who are able to access Nagorno-Karabakh and have visited the detainees several times. The UK does not recognise the so-called ‘Nagorno-Karabakh Republic’ and therefore does not recognise the legal framework or Court proceedings in question”.
