YEREVAN. – The system proposed by the draft Constitutional amendments has nothing to do with a parliamentary governance model in Armenia, and, instead, a system will be set up which assumes totalitarian governance.

“You will not hold [Constitutional Amendments]” initiative member, political scientist Armen Grigoryan, stated the abovementioned at Saturday’s gathering of the “No [to Constitutional Amendments]” front.

“The number-one issue on today’s political agenda is the constitutional amendments,” noted Grigoryan. “They are implemented to organize the ‘reproduction’ of [President] Serzh Sargsyan, (…) [and] therefore we need to unite to fight against the amendments.”

In his view, the proposed system will lead Armenia on a path to becoming a North Korea.

Initiative member Arshak Musakhanyan, for his part, added: “The [Armenian] authorities are concerned, and they feel threatened by the creation of the ‘No’ front.”

The new draft Constitution of Armenia has been forwarded to the National Assembly (NA). The respective parliamentary debates will get underway on September 15. And as per the NA speaker, the constitutional referendum should be conducted in late fall.

Pursuant to the new draft Constitution, Armenia will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance.
