YEREVAN. – The new Armenia-European Union (EU) agreement is especially important in the sense that it will open a new chapter in Armenia-EU relations.

The German Ambassador to Armenia, Bernhard Matthias Kiesler, stated the aforesaid to reporters on Thursday. He noted this reflecting on the EU Foreign Affairs Council’s recent authorizing of the European Commission and the High Representative to open negotiations on a new agreement with Armenia.

“The first project of the negotiations between Armenia and the European Union did not fail in the sense that it continues to be acceptable for the EU politicians who try to continue to build relations with Armenia based on this agreement,” said Kiesler. “All the prerequisites have already been established so that the case would go forward. I’m convinced that the final result will appear soon.”

Despite the limitations ever since Armenia’s accession into the Eurasian Economic Union in January, the German diplomat believes that relations can be established between Armenia and the EU in numerous domains.

“One of them is the economic and trade relations,” stressed Matthias Kiesler. “I’m confident that thanks to the new document, it will be possible to continue relations not solely with the EU, but the EU member countries. (…). But this is a very important signal that Armenia looks toward Europe.”
