YEREVAN. - The Grand Chamber of the ECHR didn’t call into question the Armenian Genocide, Eduard Sharmazanov, Armenia’s ruling Republican Party (RPA) spokesman and Vice President of Parliament told Armenian News – NEWS.am today after the session of the RPA’s executive body.

According to him, the outcome of the case Perinçek v. Switzerland was discussed at the session. The ruling of the Grand Chamber of the Strasbourg court is much more positive than that of the lower chamber. This can be considered an achievement, Sharmazanov said.

“The ruling of the lower chamber including unacceptable wording, we definitely highly appreciate the ruling of the Grand Chamber, since none of its judges called into question the issue of the veracity of the Genocide,” he said.

On October 15, the Grand Chamber of the ECHR rejected the case of Switzerland against Perinçek, but the statements of the Lower Chamber which cast doubt on the Armenian Genocide were removed.  

In 2008, a Swiss court convicted Dogu Perinçek for denying the Armenian Genocide. In December 2013, the ECHR ruled in favor of Perincek’s lawsuit that was filed against Switzerland. Subsequently, the Government of Switzerland had decided to petition that the Dogu Perincek case be referred for a review by the ECHR Grand Chamber.
