YEREVAN. – With Russia's presence in Syria, the virtual policy of fighting the Islamic State has transformed into a real war against ISIS, analyst Gagik Harutyunyan said.

Turkey is doing its best to support Islamists and fight against Kurds, but appeared in a difficult situation, and the Russian air strikes are first of all targeted against them, Harityunyan added.

“An area of instability is being created in the neighborhood of the Eurasian Economic Union members. Therefore, Russia is forced to intervene in the situation in the Middle East. You cannot compare this to an intervention in Afghanistan,” said head of Noravank fund.

With the use of Syrian and Iraqi intelligence data, Russia's air strike were rather successful, Harutyunyan said.

The analyst is confident that the air strikes showed first results: ISIS stopped being a defeating force.

“It is too early to say whether this will lead to a final victory as we are dealing with a network. But I am rather optimistic, because despite certain fundamental differences, we are eyewitnesses of the dialogue between Russia and the West,” he said.
