The Cavendish bananas, which are the world’s most popular type of bananas, are threatened by the Panama disease, which is a fungal plant disease of the roots of banana plants.

This is evidenced by the results of studies by researchers at the Wageningen University and Research Centre in the Netherlands.

In the 1950s, the Panama disease had wiped out all banana in Central and South America, reported Kedem.   

Now, experts believe that the Panama disease will return to South America, where 82 percent of the Cavendish bananas grow, and this may lead to the disappearance of this type of banana.
