Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, a center-right candidate scored a resounding victory in Portugal's presidential election Sunday, reported Lenta.ru, a Moscow-based online newspaper, citing the Associated Press.

With 98 percent of the votes counted, Rebelo de Sousa won 52.4 percent. 

De Sousa, 67, is a veteran moderate politician and a law professor.

Rebelo de Sousa will move into the head of state’s palace in Lisbon in March, replacing Anibal Cavaco Silva, who has served the maximum of two five-year terms.

Even though the president of Portugal has no executive power and is largely a figurehead, he can dissolve Parliament in a crisis, if he feels the country is going off track.
