YEREVAN. – The new draft Electoral Code of Armenia will be submitted to the National Assembly (NA) next week.

Chairman of the NA Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs, Hovhannes Sahakyan, who is also a member of the NA faction of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, informed about the above-said to Armenian News-NEWS.am.

Subsequently, the said committee will hold a respective public debate with the country’s civil society, and then the draft election law will be put on the agenda of the plenary session of the Armenian parliament.

The draft Electoral Code was approved at Thursday’s Cabinet meeting.

Pursuant to it, parliamentary elections will be the only national elections in Armenia, and they will be conducted solely with proportional representation—i.e. political party lists.

In addition, guaranteed parliamentary seats will be allocated to the four largest national minorities of Armenia.

Also, online lists will be introduced, and online voting will be available for Armenia’s diplomats and the employees of Armenian companies who work abroad.  

The new Electoral Code of the country shall be adopted by June 1.
